"The forest management operations concerning the Puszcza Białowieska Natura 2000 site that have been undertaken by Poland infringe EU law", the European Court of Justice said in a statement.

The judgment States that Poland had not fulfilled its obligations relating to the protection of the Bialowieza forest - one of Europe's last virgin forests, which is included in the world heritage Fund of UNESCO.

In an effort to accommodate some of the European Union executive's recommendations over changes to the court system in Poland, the ruling conservative Law and Justice (PiS) party recently came forward with a series of legislative initiatives to modify disputed laws regulating the work of the country's common court system and the Supreme Court.

Environmental protection activists and European Union experts say the large-scale felling of trees destroys rare animal habitats and plants, in violation of regulations.

At stake is not only the unique biodiversity of the woodland but also, some lawyers and environmentalists say, the future of European institutions and the rule of law.

In 2016, the Polish environment minister authorized an increase of logging activities in the Bialowieza forest - one of three districts at he Puszcza Bialowieska Natura 2000 - in response to a spruce bark beetle outbreak. In July 2017, the European Commission brought an action before CURIA accusing Poland of affecting the integrity of the natural forest site.

The court a year ago also ordered an injunction, aimed at stopping logging while the case was being decided and threatened Warsaw with fines if it failed to obey.
