US China trade war to have limited impact
Europe's top trade official said Wednesday that new USA steel and aluminum tariffs are distorting global trade and could damage hopes for economic growth.
China, which too featured in the list of countries penalised with higher duties on import of steel and aluminium on March 23, announced higher tariffs on a number of items imported from the USA in retaliation.
The talks between the European Union and the U.S. are already under way at "different levels".
U.S. President Donald Trump announced on March 8 that the United States would impose import duties of 25 percent and 10 percent respectively on imported steel and aluminum products due to how they endangered "national security".
After failing to get an exemption on tariff hikes by the Donald Trump administration, India on Tuesday raised the issue of USA imposing higher tariffs on certain steel items at the committee of safeguards of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) seeking consultation.
The EU has drawn up a list of "rebalancing" duties worth some 2.8 billion euros ($3.4 billion) to slap on US products if it is not permanently excluded.
"We have not offered the USA anything", she said this morning.

The current exemption expires on 1 May.
"We expect to be permanently and unconditionally exempted from these measures".
The United States has told the World Trade Organization it has agreed to discuss with China the Trump administration's efforts to slap tariffs on steel, aluminum and an array of goods from China.
So far, the European Union has managed to stay out of the escalating trade tensions between the USA and China.
Meanwhile, the European Commission is planning to set up a monitoring system for the import of aluminum in the coming weeks.
"It's always worrisome if any of our partners are willing to take unilateral action against us, or against any of us", he said, but he noted that "support for multilateralism has strengthened recently because of unilateral actions".
