FAA orders emergency jet engine inspections after US plane failure
US investigators looking into the Southwest Airlines accident that left one passenger dead are focusing their probe on the plane's left engine, where a fan blade broke off and burst out of the casing.
A cycle concerns a complete flight, from engine start to takeoff and landing to complete shutdown.
The Federal Aviation Administration, a regulatory authority, said Wednesday it would publish "within two weeks" a mandatory directive for the engines. The company also recommended that fan blades with 20,000 cycles be inspected by the end of August. The National Transportation Safety Board said an engine fan blade on Flight 1380 suffered metal fatigue before breaking.
The manufacturer had issued two service bulletins previous year calling for additional inspections of fan blades on the CFM56-7B engines following a similar incident in 2016 on another Southwest plane.
Fellow passengers pulled the passenger - identified as Jennifer Riordan, 43 - back in, but she later died of her injuries.

Southwest crews were inspecting similar engines the airline had in service, focusing on the 400 to 600 oldest of the CFM56 engines, according to a person with knowledge of the situation.

Following the fatal engine failure on a 737 Tuesday, the Federal Aviation Administration is poised to issue an emergency airworthiness directive calling for stepped up inspections of the CFM56-7B engine manufactured by CFM International.
The shrapnel shattered a window and depressurized the cabin, partially sucking a woman out of the plane. Specifically, engines that have made more than 30,000 trips must undergo inspections within 20 days. The jet, which was headed from NY to Dallas, made an emergency landing in Philadelphia.
