If a user long presses a private message on Facebook a "Delete Message" pop up confirms that the function will "delete your copy of the message", and the recipients' copy will remain. Far from it, it seems that not a day goes by without some new piece of information which paints Facebook and company CEO Mark Zuckerberg in an unfavorable light.

Under what criteria Facebook would "authorize" ad buyers, the company did not say directly in the post. At the time, Facebook let people share information about their friends through these types of apps, but it stopped the practice several years ago. "This may take some time", a Facebook spokeswoman wrote in an email on Friday.

Facebook-owned Instagram has long had the option to "unsend" direct messages, while Facebook-owned WhatsApp recently launched a deletion function where unread messages can be deleted "for everyone".

Facebook disclosed in September that Russians under fake names had used the social network to try to influence USA voters in the months before and after the 2016 election, writing about inflammatory subjects, setting up events and buying ads. Any advertiser who doesn't pass will be prohibited from running political or issue ads.

In June we also plan to release a public, searchable political ads archive. Authorities pointed to FB's collection of data using cookies from people who do not have an FB account but navigate other pages containing a "like" button.

"So we have now disabled this feature", Mike Schroepfer, Facebook's chief technology officer, said in a blog post published Wednesday.

Moscow has denied the allegations.

Sandberg, in a separate interview with PBS, said: 'We're not just open to regulations, we're moving ahead of it, ' and had built a tool which would be live before the next USA election and which would show details of who paid for election ads and demographics of the audience. But this is not the first time the social media giant has faced heat over its handling of user data.

Cambridge Analaytica, a data-mining firm that has done work for US President Donald Trump, has been accused of harvesting user profiles to help influence elections.

"Election interference is a problem that's bigger than any one platform, and that's why we support the Honest Ads Act. By not using the platform for a day, it's a virtual demonstration that is easy to do but will send a powerful message that we demand better", she said.

Last week, the BC Greens said they worked with the Victoria-based company briefly in 2016, noting they had asked the company to work on a new voter contact database and a website.

The European Union has given Facebook until next week to answer questions over the harvested data, while the London offices of Cambridge Analytica have been searched by Britain's Information Commissioner.

Having access to such a massive amount of data could also pose national security risks, said Winterton. The Federal Trade Commission is investigating whether the company violated a 2011 agreement to get permission from users before sharing their data.

AggregateIQ has said it has always complied with the law and has denied ever being part of Cambridge Analytica or its parent firm, SCL.
