Though users in those territories previously agreed to TOS dictated by the company's corporate entity in the European Union nation of Ireland, now they must legally agree to be bound by the US-based corporation's terms. This changes the status of 1.5 billion Facebook users who will now be covered by US laws rather than Irish law.

Facebook will change the way it administers its terms of service (TOS) for 1.5 million users in Africa, Asia, Australia and Latin America, the company confirmed today.

Users will also be asked whether they want to allow Facebook to use data from partners such as apps and websites to tailor the ads they see, and whether they want to share political, religious or relationship information from their profiles. Facebook said the latest change does not have tax implications. Instead they will be governed by more lenient US privacy laws, said Michael Veale, a technology policy researcher at University College London.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg has claimed that Facebook already provides numerous protections that the GDPR does on their own platform, allowing users to control the information that they share with Facebook and even allows users to delete that data. The EU says the rules are the most important change in data privacy regulation in a generation as it tries to catch up with technological advances since 1995, when the last comprehensive rules were approved.

The GDPR is a law on data protection and privacy which addresses the export of personal data outside of the European Union, with the new upgrades set to include the global Oculus community to safeguard users in VR environments. The tech company may have found a new batch of trouble. Outside of the USA and Canada, Facebook users fall under the terms and conditions associated with Facebook's operation in Ireland, which means this new European law could protect people in Australia, Africa and Asia. Ireland was unaware of the change, said Reuters, quoting an Irish official who on condition of anonymity "said he did not know of any plans by Facebook to transfer responsibilities wholesale to the United States or to decrease Facebook's presence in Ireland, where the social network is seeking to recruit more than 100 new staff".

Facebook Canada head of public policy Kevin Chan denied that the company would do such a thing.

The GDPR is set to take effect on May 25 and will affect more than just the users living in the EU.

LinkedIn said in a statement on Wednesday that all users are entitled to the same privacy protections.
