Not really. Any website that uses Facebook log in or sign up option, runs Facebook ads, has a Like button alongside its posts or uses Facebook analytics sends information about your browsing activity back to the social network.

San Francisco: Facebook, embattled in a scandal over the mishandling of user data, confirmed on Monday that it also collected information from people beyond their social network use. "Twitter, Pinterest and LinkedIn all have similar Like and Share buttons to help people share things on their services", he said. Besides, Amazon, Google and Twitter all offer plugin features and thus collect user information, he noted. Most of these companies, if not all, offer advertising services.

"Whether it's information from apps and websites, or information you share with other people on Facebook, we want to put you in control - and be transparent about what information Facebook has and how it is used". It will focus its attention on apps that could have gathered data not just on those who downloaded them, but also on their friends before Facebook changed its privacy rules in 2015. Tracking your location instructs it to display its content in a relevant language.

Cambridge Analytica is accused of acquiring the data of 87 million Facebook users through an academic researcher at the University of Cambridge, Alexander Kogan.

So, what does Facebook do with data it receives from other websites and apps?

It is glaringly obvious that government intervention very well could be needed to ensure that people know and consent to their personal data being shared on social-media sites.

"We know the effect of social media, how it fuels opinion now right across every sector from politics to young people and business and communities". Cookies help with identifying unique visitors and recognize which visitors are Facebook users to provide aggregated demographic information such as age and gender.

It's well past time to push Facebook to have a paid version, with no ads and no data gathering.
