Indiana fire house visitor seeks help for stoned raccoon

"As many times as the doorbell on the firehouse was pushed, the fire fighters were quite certain that something bad was going on outside", Mike Pruitt, the station's captain, told local station WTHR.

Indiana's Wayne Township Fire Department took to Twitter on Monday to recount an odd encounter firefighters found themselves in after a woman brought her pet raccoon into the station.

The woman told firefighters her raccoon had been exposed to a large amount of marijuana smoke. "What was his illness you ask?"

Firefighters in Wayne township, in are used to responding to some odd situations. "Yes! It happened! As much as we love animals, there wasn't much they could do". The raccoon in Indianapolis was eventually taken home to sleep off its high. Marijuana use is not legal in any form in IN, leading Pruitt to joke that the animal had, perhaps, "moved from Colorado, and he didn't know". The animal had smoked too much marijuana.

On Facebook, concerned commenters inquired whether the firefighters had provided the proper antidote to munchies.

It's unclear how the raccoon got high on weed. These are most often dogs, and their trips are very rarely fatal.

"We hope that everything worked out with the raccoon", Pruitt said. But, firefighters said, that's honestly not their problem. (Regulations also state that raccoon-keepers must provide their pets with creature comforts including a "nest box or sheltered retreat", branches for climbing and a wading pool or water container.) The firefighters did not have that information. "We do not expect her or the raccoon to come out of the woodwork to claim credit for the story".
