Ford teases Mustang Cobra Jet - 'mid-8-second' quarter mile
Only 68 examples of the 2018 Ford Mustang Cobra Jet will be built and all of them will be painted either Race Red or Oxford White, with unique 50th anniversary badging and the distinct Cobra Jet livery. Ford is coy about the power output, but given the weight of the vehicle and the speeds it can achieve, we can safely assume that it has more than 800 horsepower under that lightweight hood. That sounds mighty fast, and credit for that goes to the supercharged 5.2-liter Coyote V8 engine whose specs aren't available yet.
To put things into perspective, as an 8-second auto the 2016 Cobra Jet Mustang is on par with your "run of the mill" 2,000 HP Underground Racing Twin Turbo Gallardo, and that's pretty rarefied air. That began a long legacy of cars that eschew public roads in favor of track use.
Revealed at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas, this new Cobra Jet shares as much as 75% production engine parts with the factory standard Mustang GT (5.0 liter supercharged engine included), while still being able to call itself a genuine 8-second auto when it comes to doing 1/4 mile runs. It'll keep going, too, to over 150 miles per hour. Inside there's an NHRA-certified roll cage, along with Racetech FIA seats.

Ford says the 2018 Mustang Cobra Jet will be non-VIN, so you won't be able to register it for on-road use. Order books open this summer, and while pricing hasn't been announced we expect the starting price to lie close to the $100k figure of the previous model.
