Supporters of former president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva joined demonstrations to prevent him from leaving a building in São Paulo to begin his prison sentence for corruption.
Lula was flown by police to the southern city of Curitiba, where he was tried and convicted late past year, and taken to the federal police headquarters there to serve his sentence.
Lula, who despite the scandal leads easily in polls ahead of October presidential elections, tried to get his sentence delayed in a marathon appeal at the Supreme Court in Brasilia on Wednesday.
"The most visible phase of the struggle for democracy in the country is the unrestricted defense of the former president's (Lula) freedom, and, moreover, his right to be a candidate in this year's presidential election".
When he first tried to leave to turn himself in, however, dozens of supporters blocked a gate where a vehicle carrying da Silva was trying to exit.
After delivering a rousing, motivational speech on the grounds of the ABC Steelworkers Union headquarters in Sao Bernardo do Campo, Sao Paulo Saturday, Lula was hoisted in the air by hoardes of supportes, seemingly floating from the stage, amid the crowd and back into the building.
Named after a service station where agents initially uncovered a relatively small money laundering operation, "Car Wash" has turned into one of the worlds biggest ever examples of such a probe, netting scores of top politicians, some of Brazil's richest businessmen, and sending shock waves through Latin America.
The ex-President will serve his prison sentence in a cell specially prepared for him to avoid moral and physical engagement with other prisoners.

"I hope he never gets out, but I fear he will", said Silvia Gend, a 72-year-old housewife in Sao Bernardo do Campo.
"Those who persecute me can do what they want to me, but they will never imprison our dreams".
But, crucially, Lula said he would drop his dramatic show of resistance and comply with the arrest warrant.
"Those who condemn me without proof know that I am innocent and I governed honestly", Lula said in a video message to his supporters.
