No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack; moreover, police have also been unable to ascertain any reason for the incident.

In December, a week before Christmas, two suicide bombers stormed a packed Christian church in southwestern Pakistan, killing at least 10 people and wounding up to 56, in an attack claimed by Islamic State.

A press statement from the terror group on Tuesday said a "covert unit" of militants "managed to target a number of the combatant Christians".

The injured was rushed to nearby Civil Hospital Quetta.

The group was travelling in a rickshaw when armed men on a motorcycle intercepted them and opened fire in the city of Quetta, the capital of Balochistan Province.

IG Moazzam Jan explained that the attack on the Christians, appeared to be a targeted attack.

The terrorist attack on Pakistan's Christian minority was unrelated to a separate attack that same day in which gunmen killed five Muslims in Quetta, local police chief Abdul Qadeer told AP. Around 2 percent of Pakistan's population are Christians.

The Christian family was traveling to the city, which is known for its large Christian community.

In December previous year, two suicide bombers blew themselves up at a Quetta church, which was packed with worshippers, killing nine people and wounding over a dozen.

Pakistan resumed military trials for convicted terrorists and lifted a moratorium on the death penalty after a 2014 attack on a school in Peshawar that killed more than 150 people, mostly young students.

In all, at least 242 people were killed in attacks in Balochistan province in 2017, according to the South Asia Terrorism Portal research organisation.
