French President Emmanuel Macron decries 'national selfishness'

Macron told EU lawmakers Tuesday that it's important "to have a democratic, critical debate on what Europe is about" ahead of the election for the European Parliament in May 2019.

In Epinal, Mr. Macron took questions for around two hours on a panoply of topics: European sovereignty; the intricacies of fiscal rules, banking regulation and the financial crisis; gender equality; aerospace startups; the future of the French language; and France's strikes against Syria.
He is also expected to push for deep reforms of the 19-nation eurozone. Foremost, the uncertainty sparked by German elections in September set off months of negotiations in Berlin, leaving Mr. Macron without his principal European negotiating partner.
