Google Chrome now blocks autoplaying video with sound

Google launches Chrome 66 stable desktop update with several tweaks and security fixes

Google has moved Chrome 66 to the stable channel and starting earlier today has begun updating users to the browser's new major version - Chrome 66.0.3359.117. Back in January Google pushed out a Chrome update that allowed users to permanently mute certain websites, but the latest update will block autoplaying videos entirely in an effort to curb the practice. Please report any trial-specific issues to help us fix them before Site Isolation is launched more broadly.

Chrome 66 will also not trust website certificates issued by Symantec's legacy public key infrastructure before 1 June 2016.

"Site Isolation" also debuts in version 66, but for a limited number of users.

The update is due to ship to users in the coming days. However, it has said it will restrict access to bug details and links until a majority of users are updated with a fix. Announced last September, warnings will appear when visiting sites that have not transitioned to the new DigiCert Certificate Authority. Clicking on the options meant for this, the users are asked to input their computer passwords and after the authorization is complete, the passwords that are saved in Google Chrome will be exported as a CSV file.

You'll have to go to Settings for this one, and look for the Passwords menu in the Advanced tab. The feature has been in development for Chrome since a year ago, but there are some exceptions. The user can download these passwords to the system. The security-related bugs fixed in Chrome 66 are detailed in a separate blog post, here. By enabling Site Isolation, pages from different sites run in different processes with each process blocked from receiving particular types of sensitive data from other portals. And there is a new asynchronous Clipboard API that provides a "promise-based means of reading from and writing to the clipboard".

Google Chrome 66 build has been released for Windows, Mac, Linux and Android. The changes that are to be found in the new browser are included in a list available in the log section. Apart from the mentioned new features, Chrome 66 brings stability and performance improvements in the app. That's right, once you upgrade your Chrome browser to the latest version, annoying videos won't play automatically as soon as you load the page.
