Chats can be accessed through Android Messages which is a default messaging app and it comes with a pre-installed on all Android devices.

Unfortunately, Chat itself won't support end-to-end encryption, so it's about as secure as SMS. Apple's iMessage does well because Apple controls other messaging apps in its OS, but Android is not doing so.

Google's Allo was not as successful as the tech giant had hoped it would be.

The Verge reported Thursday, April 19, the new technology is called "Chat", and will be based off a communications standard called the "Universal Profile for Rich Communication Services", or RCS.

The chat will be launching by the Google in later part of the year.

Not too long ago, it was found that Android Messages - the default SMS app on Google Pixel and Nexus phones, as well as many Android One and near-stock Android devices - could soon be getting a web client for use online. It's unclear when or if Apple will support RCS.

Importantly, RCS is meant to be a carrier-based standard - not just a Google one. In India, Google is talking to Airtel, Jio and Vodafone for the Chat service. However, the biggest news is that the new app is likely to be called "Chat", and will be a complete overhaul of the Android messaging system. While Google will continue supporting the app, now would be a great time to switch to another messaging service. The company has put Anil Sabharwal of Google Photos fame in the hot seat for Chat.

Google is trying for a while to get into the messaging space. Akin to its doomed Google Plus social networking platform, the company hasn't been able to replicate the success WhatsApp has achieved or Facebook has with its Facebook Messenger.

The new standard messages you will be charged for the data consumed when sending your message, and not the cost of SMS. For instance, Google Allo uses machine learning technology to make the instant messaging experience fun and smarter.

Before you assume it's another app lined up next to Google's existing messaging apps, let me clarify that it's not an app. But it will be backward compatible with SMS, so if the user you are chatting with doesn't have a Chat-enabled client then the messages will be sent over standard SMS. If they aren't, the text will be delivered in SMS form.
