Hawley claims Greitens used a donor list from his former veteran's charity to raise money for his gubernatorial campaign in 2016.
St. Louis Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner charged Greitens, 44, with felony computer tampering relating to a list of donors to his St. Louis-based charity The Mission Continues, which Greitens founded in 2007 and left in 2014. Missouri Attorney General Josh Hawley said on April 18 that there was enough evidence to show that Greitens obtained the list illegally - adding that such a move constitutes a felony.
The governor is fighting for his political life. So he handed the evidence over to Gardner, who only had a few days to make a decision on whether to charge Greitens.
Greitens was charged by complaint, not indicted by a grand jury.
He will appear in court on May 14 for the case involving the invasion-of-privacy charge.
A spokeswoman for Mr. Greitens did not immediately return a request for comment.
Hawley said he does not have the jurisdiction to charge Greitens, so he turned over his evidence to St. Louis Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner because the alleged crime occurred in the City of St. Louis. "Both parties and the people of St. Louis deserve a thorough investigation of these allegations".
The AP reported in October 2016 that Greitens' campaign had used a list of donors to The Mission Continues to raise almost $2 million.
The governor later filed requests for a restraining order against Hawley and a special prosecutor in The Mission Continues case. The Attorney General's office also subpoenaed Greitens through the Greitens Group, the company Greitens established to coordinate his book sales, Hawley announced recently.

According to the court document, the president of the charity told an investigator Greitens and the person who got the list did not have permission to use the list for political purposes.
"These are serious charges-and an important reminder that no one is above the law in Missouri", Hawley said in the statement. The governor and K.T. disclosed the donor list "for the goal of obtaining property of $500 or more. We will dispense with these false allegations", Greitens said in a statement. Neither Greitens nor "K.T." had permission from the Mission Continues to disclose the donor list to the fundraiser for political gain, the charges say.
The Associated Press said Greitens raised almost $2 million from donors on the list.
That charge is for invasion of privacy for allegedly taking a partially or fully nude photo and "subsequently transmitted the image contained in the photograph in a manner that allowed access to that image via a computer". "The investigation into The Mission Continues addresses an entirely separate matter". The Missouri governor initially denied that his campaign had used the donor list, but later agreed to pay a $100 fine for failing to report that his campaign had obtained the list.
The new charge is expected to bring renewed calls in the House and Senate for the governor to resign or be impeached.
It's the second felony charge the Missouri Republican is facing.
The controversy around Greitens, once seen as a rising star in the Republican Party, has consumed Missouri politics.
Hawley, who is running to unseat U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill, questioned why Hawley waited so long to act.
