April 2 is World Autism Awareness Day, when businesses, schools and homes around the state will shine blue lights to recognize those with autism. There are many types of autism, each occurring because of different combinations of environmental and genetic influences. Through email, social media and by phone, they have been able to connect with more than 600 families, doing everything from helping them with their diagnosis papers to connecting them with non-profit organizations that can provide support. A few hospitals also organized awareness campaigns to put spotlight on the barriers that children with autism face along with others living with autism. Facilities have also been established for their treatment and management locally.
