Leicester 0-0 Saint: Iheanacho fires blank as Ndidi returns

Southampton manager Mark Hughes felt his side missed an opportunity to give their Premier League survival bid a major shot in the arm after they played out a dour stalemate against Leicester.

Leicester striker Kelechi Iheanacho went close in the first half before Southampton's Shane Long was denied from close range after the break. On the whole, chances remained few and far between, Jamie Vardy showing good skill to connect with a ball over the top on 70 minutes to volley towards the Saints goal, only for McCarthy to tip the ball over the crossbar.

Southampton's first opening came shortly afterwards when Dusan Tadic's half-volley flew just past the post, this time it was Hamer's turn to just watch and hope.

Aside from that, Southampton barely threatened at all, and Leicester had another chance when Demarai Gray burst into the box and pulled the ball back for Adrien Silva, who saw his effort blocked inside the box. Much to the annoyance of manager Hughes on the touchline. First real opening for Southampton as Foxes only half-clear a ball into their box but the ball falls to Tadic and he fires an effort at goal, but slices it well wide of the Leicester goal.

Southampton ended up hanging on for a draw in a match they really needed to win.

Southampton can enjoy the prospect of an FA Cup semi-final on Saturday, which is a rare opportunity for fans to be optimistic, but their future in the Premier League looks to be coming to an end.

Leicester's performance epitomised that of a team comfortably in mid-table and with little to play for as the season reaches its conclusion.

This fragile backline is sure to be tested by Claude Puel's team, who have only failed to score five times in 33 league games this campaign.

Marc Albrighton played on the right of a back four in a 4-4-1-1 formation but was still able to present a threat with his delivery - providing several chances for Vardy in the second half. Leicester were clearly benefiting from fresher legs than Saints - the visitors looked physically incapable of launching a counter-attack when the opportunity arose - but in truth both sides looked exhausted in the 22°c heat.

Southampton have been involved in five of these goalless draws in 2017-18; more than any other side. There were only four shots on target and no bookings, a reflection of a low-key contest.
