A bus carrying a Canadian hockey team in Saskatchewan has collided with a truck causing numerous fatalities. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said the accident took place Friday evening on Highway 35 about 19 miles north of Tisdale
Fifteen team members, including players, coaches and other staff, were killed.
Humboldt's head coach, the team captain and the team's play-by-play announcer are among the casualties of the unthinkable tragedy.
Babcock said he's driven the stretch of two-lane highway north of Tisdale where Humboldt was heading to play Game 5 of a semifinal series against the Nipawin Hawks. The Broncos were about 20 minutes away from their destination at the time of the crash. The driver is being provided with mental health and wellness assistance.
"He's alive and breathing, and from what we know he has a broken back, and as of now, can't feel anything from his waist down", Straschnitzki told CBC News.
"I've driven that road just like those kids did", he said. "Throughout Canada, we see teams going out into the Canadian winters on buses all the time".
Addressing a news conference on Saturday RCMP Saskatchewan Assistant Commissioner Curtis Zablocki confirmed that the driver of the lorry was uninjured in the smash but had been briefly retained in custody afterwards. The truck had been travelling westbound on Highway 335. Conditions at the time of the crash were clear and cold.
The intersection where the accident occurred has stop signs and flashing lights.
Photographs of the wreckage showed the twisted trailer with most of its wheels in the air and the bus on its side with its back portion destroyed.
While most of the players were from elsewhere in western Canada, they were put up by families in the small town of Humboldt.

In a statement released on April 7, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said, "to the entire Humboldt community: We are here for you".

Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe said he found the news "difficult to comprehend".
"There was no one in the room that commanded more respect than Mark".
