India Becomes Second Largest Mobile Phone Producer In The World

While his flagship 'Make in India' drive is still a long way from delivering on lofty job promises, Modi has had some success with the PMP.

India has imposed a 10 percent tax on imports of key smartphone components including populated printed circuit boards, which are at the heart of smartphones, according to a government document.

Meanwhile, in order to encourage more local production of mobiles, and components being used in the mobile manufacturing, Govt. of India has increased import duty of major mobile components by 10%. At present, Samsung is the only major worldwide player that assembles PCBs (which include chipsets, processors, expansion cards, and so on) locally.

The move, if implemented, would be the latest step in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's phased manufacturing programme (PMP), a plan unveiled in 2016 to step up local value addition every year in the smartphone manufacturing space.

According to data shared by the ICA, India accounted for 11 per cent of global mobile production in 2017 compared to 3 per cent in 2014. Now India is the second largest vendor of mobile phones in the world, she was able to overtake Vietnam. Now, it trails only China, which is leading smartphone market in the world.

India is now the second largest mobile phone manufacturing country in the world after China, as per information shared by the Indian Cellular Association (ICA). Apple has been seeking to expand its presence in India and has negotiated with the government for lower tariffs on certain components.

If India's finance ministry clears the recommendation on new duties, these could be levied in a matter of days, say government and industry sources, thus making populated PCB imports more expensive and pushing players to locally mount components instead. Other players like Oppo, Vivo and Motorola too are building PCB-mounting facilities here. Higher duties may push Apple Inc.to expand its manufacturing and assembly capabilities in the country and give it an edge over its rivals such as Samsung Electronics Co. and Xiaomi Corp.

Importantly, imports of the mobile devices in the country also reduced to less than half in 2017-18.

Besides, the Task Force has a target of exporting 120 million mobiles from India, by next year.
