2019 Chevy Corvette ZR1 pace car
The 2019 Chevy Corvette ZR1 is getting ready to be the official Pace Car for the 2018 Indianapolis 500 on Sunday, May 27, which is the 102nd running of the race.
It marks the 15 time a Corvette has served as the official Pace Car since 1978, and the 29 time a Chevrolet has led the field dating back to 1948, when a 1948 Fleetmaster Six convertible paced the race. With a storied history and a tradition of excellence, the Corvette should remain ranked among the world's greatest sports cars in the future. Not just any Corvette will do, so the new ZR1 has risen to the challenge. In a press release this morning, they also mention it will be the 15th Corvette pace vehicle. The Corvette has generally been one of the more appropriate cars to pace the race, considering it's a genuine sports auto. It is connected to an eight-speed automatic transmission which enables the auto to accelerate from 0-60 miles per hour in 2.85 seconds before hitting a top speed of 212 miles per hour (341 km/h). Arthur Chevrolet competed in the 1911 race, and Gaston Chevrolet won it in 1920.
Prior to 1996, the maker of the Indy 500 pace auto changed from year to year, but since the first Chevrolet paced the field back in 1948, a variety of vehicles led the field in the years leading up to the current string that started in 1997.
According to Indianapolis Motor Speedway president J. Douglas Boles, "Chevrolet and IMS enjoy one of the longest-running and strongest bonds in motorsports".
