Iran's top leader stops using popular Telegram messaging app
Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei stopped using the Telegram messaging application popular among the Iranians, khamenei.ir website reported on Wednesday.
ISNA news agency did not give a reason for the government ban on the service which lets people send encrypted messages and has an estimated 40 million users in the Islamic Republic.
Iran's move comes after a court in Russia last week ordered Telegram, set up by Russian entrepreneur Pavel Durov, to be blocked after the company refused to share its encryption data with the country's security services.
The fate of Telegram in Iran became a hot subject in political circles late last month, when the chairman of the Parliament's National Security Commission Alaeddin Boroujerdi said a decision has been made "at the highest levels" to permanently ban Telegram by April 20.
It directed users to accounts on Iranian messaging services, including Soroush and Gap, which the authorities are trying to promote.
This was interpreted as seeking to encourage the use of domestic apps, which many Iranians fear will be monitored by intelligence services.

The espionage services of the enemies play the pivotal role in confrontation with Iran, the Leader said, stressing, however, that the intelligence organizations of the adversaries have failed to do any major harm to the country despite all their facilities.
During a wave of protests that hit dozens of Iranian cities in December and January, Iranian authorities temporarily banned Telegram, accusing it of allowing foreign-based "counter-revolutionary" groups to fuel unrest.
Many Iranians kept accessing Telegram then, using virtual private networks (VPNs) and other tools to bypass government filtering.
