Iraq launches airstrikes on IS positions inside Syria
Iraq carried out airstrikes on ISIS positions in Syria on Thursday, which marks one week after Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said his country would defend itself from militant threats across the border.
"According to the statement, the attacks countered dangers posed by the armed group, and noted that the attack reflected the Iraqi armed forces' "military capabilities" in fighting terror".
The strike against the terrorists was conducted on Abadi's order "because of the danger they pose to Iraqi territory", a statement said.
It added that these strikes "will accelerate the elimination" of Islamic State's presence in the region.
Iraq has announced it carried out "deadly" air strikes against fighters of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS) group, situated in pockets inside neighbouring Syria.

The prime minister is seeking another term after taking office in September 2014, almost four months after the Iraqi army collapsed in the face of an ISIS assault, leaving the extremist group in control of almost a third of Iraq.
Cells believed to be linked to Daesh have since mounted scattered attacks in different parts of Iraq.
