Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, who has been admitted to All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) for kidney transplant, was kept under observation on Saturday and the surgery may be done either on Sunday or Monday, hospital officials said.

Sources said the Minister, who was confined to a controlled environment at home, was shifted to the AIIMS.

Jaitley tweeted earlier this week that he was suffering from kidney related problems and infections and that his treatment would be determined by his doctors.

The medical team who would conduct the medical transplant will be headed by Sandeep Guleria, a specialist from Apollo Hospitals and brother of AIIMS Director Randeep Guleria.

It was the same facility where External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj underwent her kidney transplant in December 2016.

On Wednesday afternoon, Mr. Jaitley was brought to the hospital for "finishing formalities for a donor kidney" ahead of the surgery. Reports say that a team of doctors led by VK Bansal would be operating the 65-year-old minister. He had to cancel his next week's visit to London for an annual economic dialogue.

Jaitley underwent a gastric bypass weight loss surgery for diabetes management in 2014.

Jaitley had been working since the past 10 days under a restricted environment from the Cardio-Neuro Tower at AIIMS.

Jaitley is considered to be the second most important person in the Narendra Modi government, after the Prime Minister himself.

Several senior leaders including Congress President Rahul Gandhi, Jammu and Kashmir former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal have wished him a quick recovery.
