Former Manchester City midfielder Joey Barton has been appointed the next manager at League One side Fleetwood Town, the club have announced.
Barton, 35, who is approaching the end of a suspension for a charge relating to betting, will take charge of a club now sitting in 14th spot in the League One standings. It's a club I've known for a long time, and a chairman I already have a very good relationship with.
"I'm joining a club with big ambitions. I'm looking forward to getting started on 2 June".
Originally banned for 18 months, Barton had the term reduced to 13 months on appeal after the FA agreed the initial term was excessive - leaving him able to return to football effective June 1.
The Cod Army have endured something of a roller-coaster season, even sacking Uwe Rosler midway through the campaign, but Sheridan has steadied the ship during his time at the club.

"He's someone I've known for a number of years and I'm convinced he's ready to make the step into management, and that he will be a huge success", Pilley added.
"This is a huge appointment for Fleetwood and one I'm very excited about", said Pilley.
"John joined us on a short-term arrangement with the aim of keeping us in League One and I'm delighted he's been able to do that".
Away from football, Barton was jailed for six months in May 2008 after admitting common assault and affray during an incident in Liverpool the previous December. City had nearly sacked him in December 2004 after he stubbed out a cigarette in a youth team player's eye during the club Christmas party.
And in 2012, while playing for QPR, Barton was sent off for elbowing Carlos Tevez on the final day of the season at Manchester City.
