
US-S.Korea joint drills begin
As opposed to the past when Seoul deliberately publicized the USA strategic assets approaching the peninsula for the exercises, local military sources said the Defense Ministry will try to keep the exercises low-key this year in order to not provoke North Korea, which has promised to halt all missile and nuclear testing during the period of talks.

More than 11,500 service members, including thousands based outside of Korea, plan to participate in the four-week Foal Eagle training, along with around 300,000 South Korean soldiers.
The annual Foal Eagle drill - a series of field training exercises involving about 11,500 USA and 290,000 South Korean troops - began early yesterday, a South Korean Ministry of Defense spokesman said. The Japanese island plays a strategic role for United States deployment in the region and hosts some 26,000 United States troops.

It's unclear if joint military drills this month or in April will complicate Trump's efforts to secure the denuclearization of North Korea, a goal he will discuss with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un at a summit in upcoming weeks. While the date for the much-hyped meeting has not yet been set, it is expected to take place by May.
