Rajinder Sachar former chief justice of Delhi HC dies at 94

Former Delhi High Court chief justice and activist Rajinder Singh Sachar, who brought to fore the socio-economic and educational conditions of the Muslim community in the country, passed away around noon on Friday in New Delhi. "He was undergoing treatment for ailments related to old age", the family friend said.

Sachar was admitted to Fortis hospital earlier this week.

Sachar is best remembered for his report on the socio-economic conditions of Indian Muslims, which recommended the then Dr Manmohan Singh government to take steps towards uplifting the condition of the community. He had also served as the additional judge of the Delhi High Court for two years in 1972.

"Justice Sachar was fearless and stood before anyone who suffered a gross violation of human rights", said Satyendra Rajan, the Vice-President (Delhi Unit) of the People's Union of Civil Liberties (PUCL). The report, now famously known as Sachar Committee report, highlighted that Muslims were under-represented in the civil service, police, military and in politics.

In 2012, a group of social activists, lawyers, retired army officers, journalists and film makers had formed an online petition to support Justice Rajinder Sachar for the post of President. In it, the committee showed the extent of backwardness among Muslims, triggering a public discourse around Muslim inequality. Further, it found a huge mismatch between the percentage of Muslims in the population and in decision-making positions such as the IAS and IPS, and the general poor representation of the community in the police.
