Kawauchi, Linden lift landmark Boston Marathon titles

On the fifth anniversary of the finish line explosions that killed three and wounded hundreds more, Linden became the first USA woman to win since Lisa Larsen Weidenbach in 1985 - before the race began offering prize money that lured the top global competitors to town.

Boston Marathon victor Desiree Linden said the moment she slowed down to wait for a fellow us runner was actually a "turning point" for her in the race - and actually prevented her from dropping out of the grueling race. But Sellers' finish may have been the most improbable.

"I woke up exhausted like I had run a marathon but also just thrilled like I won a marathon", Linden said Tuesday.

"The first thing I had going for me was I wasn't anxious about time, because of weather", said Hyland, who was a cross-country star with her husband at Williams College.

Sellers (nee: Callister) never planned to podium at Boston. Not even when she qualified for Boston after winning the Huntsville Marathon last September in Utah in 2:44:27. After that, she set her sights on Boston with hopes of a top-15 finish that would automatically earn her a spot at the Olympic trials in two years.

Together, the two traveled the remaining 10.2 miles to the finish.

The temperate Monday morning at the start line was announced at 30 degrees and rain fell throughout the race, often heavily, to make for a slower overall pace. Both women were struggling to fight through the weather, and Flanagan chose to jolt off course into a port-a-potty - only to return to the pack about 14 seconds later, with Linden by her side.

She was a keen track and field competitor in college, but is an unknown to the professional running world.

Sellers, 26, who works as a nurse in Arizona, was running only her second marathon after starting training roughly seven months ago. But her full time job, is Spanish teacher at Phillips Academy.

Marcel Hug of Switzerland notched his fifth win in the men's wheelchair division, while American woman Tatyana McFadden also won her fifth title.
