For the first time ever, an artist not formally associated with the Classical/Opera or Jazz genres has won the Pulitzer Prize for Music (beating out contemporary composers Ted Hearne and Julliard's Michael Gilbertson) - and his name is Kendrick Lamar.

But in spite of his critical and commercial successes (as Randall Roberts of the Los Angeles Times points out, Lamar is not only the first rapper to win a Pulitzer, but also the first victor to boast a platinum or No. 1 album), Lamar has never picked up one of the industry's most significant awards: the Grammy for Album of the Year.

The awards recognize "the importance of a strong vibrant independent press", new Pulitzers administrator Dana Canedy said at a recent reception.

The New York Times and the New Yorker won awards for their coverage of the Harvey Weinstein sexual harassment that gripped the USA while Ryan Kelly of the Daily Progress newspaper won the breaking news photography category for the picture of his that captured the moments a white supremist drove his auto into a group of ant-racist protesters in Charlottesville.

Kendrick Lamar gave an enigmatic performance at the Grammy ceremony, accompanied by dancers dressed in army fatigue.

The 30-year-old musician won the prestigious prize - awarded for achievements in literature, journalism and music - for his fourth album "Damn".

A string of stories in the two newspapers shined light on connections between Russian officials and Mr Trump's 2016 campaign.

The 30-year-old Grammy victor beat finalists Michael Gilbertson ('Quartet') and Ted Hearne ('Sound from the Bench') to the award; both classical composers of a similar age. The victor is determined by vote of the Board of Directors award.

But the board in the mid-1990s introduced changes to make the award more inclusive. Prairie Fires, a life of author Laura Ingalls Wilder by Caroline Fraser, won for biography. The Pulitzer committee said the album "offers affecting vignettes capturing the complexity of modern African-American life".

Manuel Mogato, who has been Reuters' political and general news correspondent in Manila for close to 15 years, along with fellow reporters Clare Baldwin and Andrew R.C. Marshall, worked on "Duterte's War", a series of stories that covered different aspects of the anti-narcotics crackdown.
