Santosh Trophy Kerala Beat Mizoram Will Meet Bengal In Final
It will be a treat for fans in the spiritual home of Indian football as hosts West Bengal and Kerala, two of the most successful teams in the history of the Santosh Trophy national football championship, go up against each other in the final of the tournament's 72nd edition at the Yubabharati Krirangan here on Sunday.
Each member of the squad will be awarded one sovereign of gold.
Bengal coach Ranjan Chowdhury today blamed their heartbreaking loss to Kerala in the Santosh Trophy final on injuries to key players.
The cup winning team of 1992 was also honoured with a cash award of Rs 1,00,001.
Kerala had won the prestigious annual football event five times before; 1973-74, 1991-92, 1992-93, 2000-01 and 2004-05.
During the match, M.S. Jithin scored in the 19th minute for Kerala while Jiten Murmu drew level for Bengal in the 68th minute.
Jithin MS broke from the right and played a square pass to Rahul KP who found the keeper through a first-time shot. Bengal's left-back, Abhishek Mukherjee was off his position and with Sourav Dasgupta failing to track the winger, Jithin MS brought up his fifth goal of the tournament by slotting home through goalkeeper Ranajit Majumder's gates.
Kerala have emerged the overwhelming favourites at the tournament but face their biggest test against a Bengal team which knows all about them, having faced the Southern outfit earlier in a redundant Group A game.

Vibin Thomas put Kerala ahead in the 116th minute through a header.
However, Tirthankar had other plans when he converted from a free kick from 25 yards in the sixth minute of injury time, taking the game to shootout.
