On a day when the Congress and other opposition parties made a decision to submit notice for impeachment proceedings against Chief Justice of India, Dipak Misra, the Supreme Court on Friday expressed its displeasure over the public discussion on impeachment of judges. "We will discuss a range of issues", he said. The Trinamool Congress, a key opposition party, has however not signed the motion, said a party leader who asked not to be identified.

According to sources, the proposal seeking impeachment motion against the Chief Justice of India has signatures of 50 MPs.

After the meeting, Leader of Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad confirmed that the leaders were moving the notice for impeachment against CJI.

Earlier on Thursday, after Supreme Court dismissed a petition seeking independent probe in the Judge BH Loya case, the Congress which was disappointed with the judgement called it "sad letter day in India's history".

If the motion is tabled, Misra will become the first CJI to face the ignominy of facing impeachment. HT had reported on April 3 that Congress had already got the signatures of 65 MPs but was waiting for a broader political consensus to be reached before moving it.

For any impeachment motion to succeed, it has to be passed by a majority of not less than two-thirds of the members present and voting in both the houses, with not less than one-half of the total strength of each house participating in the voting.

Once the motion is moved, the Chair of the House may or may not admit it.

There has been a clear division within the Congress on the issue.

The Supreme Court today expressed concern over politicians making allegations against members of the judiciary in media and giving statements to initiate impeachment motion against CJI. Keep in mind that the Congress had said a few days ago that the option to bring an impeachment motion against the Chief justice of India is still open.

CJI Misra retires in October.
