Prescription Drug Take-Back Events Encourage Citizen Action
The focus of the Prescription Drug Take Back Initiative is to remove potentially risky pharmaceutical substances from medicine cabinets throughout the state and prevent them from going into the water supply. This one day effort will continue to bring a focus to the issue of pharmaceutical controlled substance abuse.
The majority of teenagers abusing prescription drugs get them from family and friends, and the home medicine cabinet.
As part of a national effort to combat prescription drug abuse, Montgomery County law enforcement and health and human service agencies are inviting residents to drop off unused, unwanted or expired prescription drugs on April 28 at several locations in the county. Medicines that sit in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. (The DEA can not accept liquids or needles or sharps, only pills or patches.) The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.

Sixteen drop-off locations will be open from 10 a.m.to 2 p.m. and will accept prescription drugs and over-the-counter medications only, according to a press release from Montgomery County police. Law enforcement personnel will not count, inventory or log medications. Only pills and patches can be accepted; liquids and sharps will not be accepted. No needles/sharps, illegal drugs, mercury thermometers, aerosol cans, personal care products (shampoo, lotions, soaps) or household hazardous waste (paint, pesticides, oil, gas) will be accepted.
