Four brainy baboons made a desperate bid for freedom from a Texas medical research center, using a 55-gallon barrel to bust out of the joint.
Texas Biomedical Research Institute and the Southwest National Primate Research Center reported that on the afternoon of April 14 four baboons left their enclosure, and three of them breached perimeter fencing around the Institute. One of the animals returned to the enclosure on his own nearly immediately.
One of the animals was seen making a mad dash along Military Drive, located near a major freeway, witness Jannelle Bouton told KSAT 12.
"The animal care team held two of the three baboons to the tree line, while members of the animal capture team followed one baboon along the street and used verbal and hand signaling commands to corral the baboon to the tree line for its safety and efficient capture", explained Dr. Bernal.
The clever primates propped barrels up against the walls of the facility in San Antonio and broke free by jumping over the fence.
Video clip revealed the animals gallivanting down roadways a few miles out of the study centre before there was a highly trained team able to re-capture them, officials said. Scientists use the animals in research on new vaccines and medicines, mysanantonio.com said.
None of the baboons were hurt during the escape, according to the station.

Researchers said in a statement that the baboons were given the barrels as an "enrichment tool" that would help them mimic foraging as they would in the wild.
The institute has used research baboons for more than 50 years and has almost 1,100 of them dating back eight generations, officials said.
Research officials are scratching their heads trying to figure just how these animals escaped their locked areas.
"This was a truly unique incident", said Lisa Cruz, assistant vice president for communications at the research institute.
The research institute houses more than 2,500 animals.
Baboons at the research institute have aided in the development of numerous drugs, therapies and vaccines for conditions like heart disease, diabetes, obesity and osteoporosis, KSAT said.
