Five Spanish players have been suspended for accosting the referee after their controversial 18-10 loss to Belgium in March. But, in a match refereed by a Romanian, Belgium won 18-10.
World Rugby said it was "deeply concerned" about the choice of Romanian officials for the match because they were "not neutral in the context of qualification, " and that Rugby Europe failed to heed Spain's request to change the officials.
Another scrum-half, Guillaume Rouet, received 36 weeks for the same offence, while the remaining players - flankers Pierre Barthere and Lucas Guillaume, and fly-half Mathieu Belie - have been given 14 weeks for threatening actions/words towards a match official. The players involved have a week to appeal the decision, with the bans taking immediate effect and applying to club and national teasm.
But in the meantime a Rugby Europe Independent Judicial Committee has sanctioned five Spanish players in bans totaling over two years.
In a statement, the chief executive of the IRP, Omar Hassanein, said: "We support World Rugby's efforts to eradicate any perceived manipulation of fair play. The misconduct complaint against the Spanish Rugby Union was suspended and a further hearing date will be set".
