The shocking spate of killings this year has seen London overtake NY for the number of murders for the first time in modern history.

In February and March, 37 people were killed in London, compared to 35 in the Big Apple, according to the Sunday Times.

London and NY have almost the exact same population.

Now local pols are even looking to New York's Finest for crime-fighting inspiration. But in March, London had 22 murders, slightly more than the 21 in NY, according to London Metropolitan Police figures that have not yet been officially released but which were confirmed to ABC News. In New York, there had been 21. The Sunday Times reported that murders in London have risen by 38% since 2014-even when excluding victims of terrorism.

Pope Francis calls for suffering in Syria to end
Under a longstanding tradition, the Netherlands donated some 50,000 tulips, daffodils, roses and orchids for the occasion. The Vatican released a statement calling the article by Scalfari "the fruit of his reconstruction", Rosica said .

"London's violent traits have become a virus", former Metropolitan Police Superintendent Leroy Logan told BBC News.

London's murder rate has grown by almost 40 per cent in three years, while police figures show that New York's has fallen by 87 per cent since 1990, raising pressure on mayor Sadiq Khan and Metropolitan Police chief Cressida Dick. Of the 44 murder investigations the police have launched in 2018, 31 have been a result of stabbings.

A recent Independent analysis found that fatal stabbings are happening in London every three days, driven by a resurgence of conflict between the city's gangs.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan's office said it was "deeply concerned" by the latest figures of knife crime in the capital, but insisted that London "remains one of the safest [cities] in the world".
