The homicide rate in London has increased each month in 2018 as the British capital experiences a rise in violent crime.

David Lammy, an MP who represents a north London constituency affected by high rates of gang violence, said that the violence was the worst that he had seen during his 18 years in parliament.

The spike saw 13 people killed within two weeks last month contributing to London having more murders in February and March than in NY, a city traditionally seen as a global business rival but with historically higher rates of crime and violence.

He will be interviewed by detectives from City of London Police, Scotland Yard said. She said a backlash against the controversial powers had gone too far while rates of gun and knife crime have surged.

"This is not an unprecedented time, but it is a very worrying time", she said.

Despite the "horrible, horrible" spate of deaths, many involving young Londoners, commissioner Dick rejected suggestions of a "crisis".

Promising officers would focus on street dealing, mugging and anti-social behaviour, the Scotland Yard chief said: "We will put even more effort into bearing down on violent crime. The police can't do that alone, we need help from Government, local government and other agencies and, most particularly, from the public".

She hailed an extra £112m handed to the Met Police by London mayor Sadiq Khan, which will be invested in the fight against knife crime, but commissioner Dick signalled she will be asking for more cash if she feels Scotland Yard "cannot get on top of this problem". She defended the Met's record and said she believed the perpetrators of the recent killings would face the courts.

Greater use of stop-and-search and continuing work with schools and local communities to turn young people from crime will be among efforts to tackle the problem, the head of Scotland Yard said.

"They [the police] were concerned that they wouldn't be any more money and couldn't refer cases to because they might not be able to pay for them", he said.

In the latest spate of stabbings, six youths were attacked within a 90-minute period, including a 13-year-old boy who was seriously wounded after being set upon in Newham, east London, shortly before 7pm.

The 13-year-old defendant and one of his older co-defendants have also been charged with possession of an offensive weapon.
