Gil Santos, the New England Patriots play-by-play man for 36 seasons, dies on his 80th birthday
The former voice of the New England Patriots Gil Santos passed away Thursday on his 80th birthday.
Son Mark Santos confirmed the death to The Boston Globe. It didn't give a cause of death.
Gil was a legendary broadcaster, who for 36 years passionately described the play-by-play detail of every Patriots game during his career, including numerous most memorable moments in franchise history. He took over play-by-play duties when the team moved to Foxborough in 1971. He left the Patriots booth when WBZ lost broadcast rights in 1980, but returned along with WBZ in 1991 and served in the play-by-play role until his retirement following the 2012 season.
Santos called 743 games in 36 seasons and also did many Boston College football games.

While most known for his work with the Patriots, Santos also had stints broadcasting games for the Boston Celtics, Penn State and Boston College football and Providence College and Big East basketball. He was named to the MASSACHUSETTS BROADCASTERS Hall of Fame in 2009 and the PATRIOTS Hall of Fame (THE HALL AT PATRIOT PLACE) in 2013.
In the wake of the news, Socci and his fellow broadcaster Scott Zolak offered their thoughts on Twitter about Santos' impact.
Patriots coach Bill Belichick released a statement Friday morning commemorating Santos, whom he said "will forever remain a special figure in the lives of generations of players, coaches and fans".
