Mike Budenholzer to meet with New York Knicks

Report: Hawks Coach Mike Budenholzer Withdraws From Suns Coaching Considerations

The New York Knicks, Milwaukee Bucks, Charlotte Hornets and Orlando Magic have current openings at head coach and could play a role in how Phoenix's search goes. At this point, there are multiple candidates who can get the job done in NY.

Having reportedly withdrawn his name from consideration for the Suns' head coaching vacancy, Hawks coach Mike Budenholzer has apparently shifted his sights toward another opportunity.

NY has set interviews with David Blatt, David Fizdale, Mark Jackson, Kenny Smith, and Jerry Stackhouse. Mike D'Antoni is the only Knicks coach to last three full seasons this century, and Mike Woodson is the only coach hired this century to finish his tenure with a winning record.

A league source confirmed the Knicks have received permission to talk to Budenholzer.

The 48-year-old Budenholzer is rooted in the coaching tree of Gregg Popovich, having served as a Spurs assistant for 17 seasons before making the move to the Hawks.

NY would certainly provide Budenholzer with a high-profile opportunity to do so, as he'd be in a major market with an All-Star big to develop as a legitimate franchise player.

Atlanta and Budenholzer appear open to a mutual breakup, but the Hawks have also told opposing teams they will pursue compensation if they allow their head coach out of his contract that has two more seasons for around $14 million remaining. He led the 2014-15 team to 60 wins and the Eastern Conference Finals, and made the playoffs in each of his first four seasons at the helm. From there, he went to Orlando, where he was an assistant with the Magic for about two and a half seasons, and then spent 30 games in 2015 as the interim coach after Jacque Vaughn was sacked.

Michael Cunningham of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported the news, noting Budenholzer has not ruled out a return to the Hawks.
