Mom who left kids alone to visit Germany gets probation
- An Iowa mother who left her four children at home while she went on a trip to Europe in September was sentenced to two years' probation Thursday. On Thursday a judge sentenced her to two years of probation. She could have faced up to eight years in prison, reports the Associated Press.
The 31-year-old Macke entered Alford pleas in February to four counts of child endangerment.
The newspaper cites an Alford plea as being one where a person doesn't admit guilt, but does acknowledge there's enough evidence for a likely conviction. At the time, the children's father, Matthew Macke, said it didn't surprise him that his former wife did such a thing.
She was charged with four counts of child endangerment and one count of giving a minor access to a gun.
A neighbor was supposed to check in on the children until the brother arrived, but within a day of her departure, the father of one of her children called and demanded she return home. He now has custody of her two youngest children.
There is a no-contact order in place for Erin pertaining to her four children, but Judge Carol Egly suggested that the defendant get counseling so that the order could be adjusted to allow her some contact.

He said the youngsters - two 12-year-olds, a 7-year-old and also a 6-year-old - had been left daily earlier.
Police told Macke that was unacceptable and ordered her to return home immediately. Instead of cancelling or postponing the 10-day trip, she instead opted to leave the children alone.
But she only cut her trip short by four days, returning to the U.S. in September 27.
"You are to have no contact with them - direct, indirect, writing, phone, voice messaging, text messaging", the judge told her previous year, as seen in a video taken by CBS affiliate KCCI.
Macke's lawyer, who did not comment following the sentencing, said his client made a mistake and should be allowed to rectify it.
Now there is a no contact order that prevents Macke from seeing or speaking with her children, other than during supervised phone calls.
