The proposed exploration technology was detailed on NASA's website late last week by University of Alabama, Huntsville's Chang-Kwon Kang, who says that Marsbee is part of a multidisciplinary program involving a Japanese team, as well.

The fact that the atmosphere is not so dense means an alternative means of propulsion could be used.

The exploratory robot bees, known officially as "Marsbees" are being developed to investigate areas of the red planet that are inaccessible to a robot on wheels.

Marsbees could be equipped with sensors to gather data as they operate in the Mars atmosphere, as well as wireless technology to transmit information back to a companion rover.

Kang's US-based team will work with a group in Japan, which has already built a hummingbird micro-air vehicle which can fly in Earth's atmosphere.

The BioBot - which integrates "advanced robotic systems" - would be a wheeled device which can follow the astronaut around. "The NIAC program gives NASA the opportunity to explore visionary ideas that could transform future NASA missions by creating radically better or entirely new concepts while engaging America's innovators and entrepreneurs as partners in the journey", told by Jim Reuter.

The Phase II awards come to reward the technology that proves to be practical and usable. NASA will fund this project, together with the other inventions selected for this year's NIAC. "Phase II studies are given to the most successful Phase I fellows, whose ideas have the best possibility of changing the possible". The project is in its early stage, now undergoing a Phase 1 evaluation in which the researchers figure out the wing design, "insect" weight, and motion to enable flight in Mars' atmosphere.
