The US space agency is about to launch a telescope that should find thousands of planets beyond our Solar System.

NASA is set to launch the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) on Monday, starting a new chapter in the search for planets that could potentially support extraterrestrial life. NASA stated that spacecraft will fly in a unique orbit that will allow it to study almost the entire sky over two years.

Barely 2 hours before the launch of SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket on Monday carrying NASA's new space telescope created to detect worlds beyond our solar system, the planned launch had to be delayed for at least 48 hours due to a technical glitch.

It is said that once TESS takes off, it will arrive in the orbit of the earth and will move in the highly elliptical path which will bring it closer to the moon.

In a blog update, NASA confirmed TESS, Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite, will launch on Wednesday. The postponement of the launch was announced just before two hours after the launch.

To fix the Falcon 9 issue, the SpaceX launch crew need additional time to conduct an analysis of the rocket's Guidance, Navigation, and Control (GNC) system, NASA explained in the news release.

"That is about 20 times what the Kepler mission was able to detect", George Ricker, TESS principal investigator at MIT, said in a statement. These so-called "transits" may mean that planets are in orbit around them.

Thus, TESS is able to locate the exoplanets, remote enough from the parent star that they could have liquid water and, consequently, living organisms. If planets are everywhere, then it is time for us to find the planets that are closest to us orbiting bright nearby stars, because these will be the touchstone system.

"TESS will search 85 percent of our sky for exoplanets orbiting bright stars and our nearest stellar neighbors", Martin Still, NASA headquarters program scientist for TESS, told Newsweek.

TESS uses the same method as Kepler for finding potential planets, by tracking the dimming of light when a celestial body passes in front of a star. Its powerful vision will have the capability to analyse the atmospheres of some of Tess's new worlds, to look for gases that might hint at the presence of life. We can say how massive they are and how old they are.

"One of the numerous stunning things that Kepler let us know is that planets are all over the place and there is a wide range of planets out there".
