Martin Truex Jr. won the pole for Saturday night's Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race at Richmond International Speedway on Friday.

Truex's average lap speed of 123.859 miles per hour was set midway through the final round of knockout qualifying and held up with Chase Elliott coming closest to topping him (123.621 mph).

Defending race victor Joey Logano will start third, followed by Denny Hamlin.

HAMLIN BOUNCEBACK: Hometown favorite Denny Hamlin sounded anything but hopeful after a few rounds of practice, saying "we have some issues, for sure" and "it's super frustrating from my standpoint and it is for (the team), too".

It should be noted that seven of the eight winners this season started inside the top 12. It is his 18th career pole and first at Richmond.

It's also a nice turnaround after finishing 37th and 30th in the past two races.

It's definitely been a crappy two weeks", he said,"but that's part of racing. You can't let these things get you down - it was just circumstances. "Just proud of the effort today". We stuck to our plan and it all worked out.

Truex, the 2017 Cup champion, has yet to win a race at the Richmond track.

"I struggled to make a few corners in practice and we changed a lot of things in the vehicle", Hamlin said.

Tough road tests await Panthers in 2018-19 season
Panthers have three division titles and four playoff appearances under head coach Ron Rivera, who took over as head coach in 2011. The game against the Seahawks marks the ninth meeting since 2010, with two of those games coming in the postseason.

"This is the closest we've been all year long to a pole and with speed in the vehicle", he said after qualifying third.

Completing the top five were defending race victor Joey Logano (123.581 mph), Denny Hamlin (123.542 mph), and Kyle Larson (123.220 mph).

Chase Elliott will start second and Joey Logano will be third. He's typically one of the series' most consistent drivers, as evidenced by his five straight top-fives prior to the drop-off, so Friday's strong showing doesn't come as a surprise.

(12) Ryan Blaney, Ford, 123.063 miles per hour. We put a little wedge in it and we probably should have just left it alone. "We try to get better and I felt like we did get a little better, but still we fell off quite a bit".

Wallace said he had difficulty on his second round attempt as well. "We'll start 18th and go to work on it on Saturday night".

"I feel pretty good", Truex told Fox Sports 1 after qualifying.

The rest of the top 10 were Kurt Busch (122.900 mph), Erik Jones (122.872 mph), Jamie McMurray (122.828 mph), William Byron (122.811 mph), and Kevin Harvick (122.805 mph). He's won four of his 25 Richmond starts with 15 top-five finishes.

Brad Keselowski will start 28th and Kasey Kahne 29th.

"We didn't make a mock (qualifying) run in practice", said Busch, who ended up 32nd fastest.
