Both previous White House incumbents also ordered troops to be sent to increase border security, with President Barack Obama sending 1,200 in 2010.

HOW MANY TROOPS: Up to 6,000 Guard members in the first year, reduced to 3,000 in the second year. He said administration officials are still reviewing the costs of the plan.

The announcement came hours after Trump pledged "strong action today" on immigration and a day after he said he announced he wanted to use the military to secure the southern border until his long-promised, stalled border wall is erected.

But the 400 troops the two states are putting up are just a fraction of President Donald Trump and Defense Secretary Jim Mattis' final goal.

He has asked the US Department of Defense for a detailed list of military and other facilities that could perform that function.

They deployed the National Guard to fix vehicles and fences, maintain roads, and carry out aerial surveillance and intelligence work.

About 100 Guardsmen remain deployed as part of that existing state mission.
