Both previous White House incumbents also ordered troops to be sent to increase border security, with President Barack Obama sending 1,200 in 2010.

The announcement came hours after Trump pledged "strong action today" on immigration and a day after he said he announced he wanted to use the military to secure the southern border until his long-promised, stalled border wall is erected.
The Associated Press reports that the president's plan to deploy National Guard troops to the border has drawn resistance from some governors across the country. Jerry Brown did not respond to questions about whether it would deploy troops.
Though states will have control over the troops, the federal government will foot the bill for the operations.
It means some governors could turn the President down, and there has not yet been any response to his request from New Mexico and California.
But the 400 troops the two states are putting up are just a fraction of President Donald Trump and Defense Secretary Jim Mattis' final goal.
He has asked the US Department of Defense for a detailed list of military and other facilities that could perform that function.
