A team from the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) arrived in Syria just hours after unprecedented US-led strikes on regime targets on Saturday, launched in response to the alleged gas attack. Western diplomats and weapons experts have underlined that time is of the essence if inspectors are going to figure out exactly what took place.
While there is historical precedent and a constantly growing body evidence to support the idea that it was Assad's decision to continue to employ chemical weapons against his own people, there's really only one way to completely put these conspiracy theories to rest: send in inspectors to conduct an independent analysis of the situation and draw their own conclusions.
No criticism or condemnation whatsoever of the violation of Syrian sovereignty was made, and there was no reference to the fact that the use of force by the three Western powers is in violation of the United Nations Charter.
"At present, we do not know when the FFM [fact-finding mission] team can be deployed to Douma", OPCW Director-General Ahmet Üzümcü says in the statement. But Bashar al-Assad is still in power, Russian Federation and Iran are still backing him, American-supported rebels are on the defensive, and peace talks through the United Nations are going nowhere.
Russia, the Syrian government's principal backer, has offered several narratives for the attack, claiming simultaneously that there was never an attack, that it was the work of rebels in the area, and that it was an "Anglo-Saxon" conspiracy to spark a provocation.
Rebels in eastern Ghouta, the area where Douma is located, have surrendered, leaving the province in Syrian hands.
