Cloudflare launches 1.1.1.1 DNS service that will speed up your internet
"We committed to never writing the querying IP addresses to disk and wiping all logs within 24 hours".
There's also getdns which has very little but stub test code in it (for now) since it was unclear how quickly these new, modern DNS services would take off.
The cloud-based website acceleration service CloudFlare, in cooperation with APNIC (Asia-Pacific Network Information Centre), has announced a new free DNS routing service, 1.1.1.1. Cloudflare's DNS is now sitting at a global response time of 14ms, compared to 20ms for OpenDNS and 34ms for Google's DNS, so it's the fastest DNS resolver for consumers. When you type in a website, like androidpolice.com or google.com, your DNS looks up the IP address tied to that domain so the page can be loaded.
Tech companies have a long tradition of introducing products on April Fools' Day. As most DNS servers are run by ISPs or some other for-profit company, the DNS data can become a treasure trove of information that ISPs in the USA can now legally sell to advertisers.
Cloudflare's 1.1.1.1 DNS promises to solve both problems.
CloudFlare is heavily touting the security aspect of the newly-launched DNS routing service. The promise is that the new DNS service is the fastest on the web and is designed with privacy-first in mind.

So, now that the 1.1.1.1 is here, should you use it, and if yes then how? Yes, you are still sending those web address requests to someone's server, and a for-profit company at that. Delete whatever is already existing, and put 1.1.1.1 in DNS 1, and 1.0.0.1 in DNS 2.
For those who need some help changing the DNS server on your device, the 1.1.1.1 site has good instructions for the iPhone, Android, macOS, Windows, Linux, and a router.
Cloudflare is working with major browsers, operating systems, app manufacturers, cloud platforms, and router manufacturers to enable DNS over HTTPS. Both technologies are open and attempt to limit or eliminate DNS lookups over unencrypted connections.
"At APNIC Labs, we're aware that the DNS is not always private, fast, or secure, and we're always looking for ways to improve how it works", said Geoff Huston, Chief Scientist at APNIC.
Cloudflare operates one of the largest infrastructures and the company's DNS service benefits from that infrastructure as it is one of the fastest available services. Cloudflare is carrying over this business model to its DNS service so that the data will not be used to track users and for targeted ads. However, there's no situation wherein the data would be needed past 24 hours. "That means, by default, your ISP, every wifi network you've connected to, and your mobile network provider have a list of every site you've visited while using them".
