AG Schneiderman launches inquiry into cryptocurrency exchanges
Schneiderman's office has sent out letters to 13 cryptocurrency exchange operators on Tuesday as part of his broader crypto fact-finding mission aimed at protecting investors in the nascent market for digital coins.
In June 2015, the New York State Department of Financial Services introduced its BitLicense business license for firms that receive or transmit virtual currency, store virtual currency on behalf of other parties, and provide exchange services.
The price of bitcoin tumbled more than 2% in a matter of minutes Tuesday afternoon, roughly three hours after New York's Attorney General Eric Schneiderman announced an investigation into major cryptocurrency exchanges.
The initiative aims to protect cryptocurrency investors and consumers by boosting the transparency and accountability of the digital trading platforms.

On April 17, 2018, Eric Schneiderman, the Attorney General (AG) for NY, introduced the Virtual Markets Integrity Initiative, which is billed as "a fact-finding inquiry into the policies and practices of platforms used by consumers to trade virtual or "crypto" currencies like bitcoin and ether".
In addition to Gemini, letters went to exchanges including Coinbase, bitFlyer, Bitfinex, Kraken, Binance, Gate.io, and itBit.
The questionnaires ask about steps to combat suspicious trading and market manipulation; policies on the operation of bots; and the safeguards in place to protect customer funds from theft, fraud, and other risks, the statement said. "Our Virtual Markets Integrity Initiative sets out to change that".
USA and global regulators have increasingly expressed concern about the need to beef up oversight as use of virtual currencies has grown quickly.
