New York Jets center Nick Mangold talks

The Jets' future Ring of Honor inductee announced his retirement early Tuesday morning, putting an end to an 11-year career.

Mangold, 34, did not play last season.

Mangold will sign a one-day contract next week and officially retire as a Jet.

"From the moment I stepped on a field, I was hooked".

"Everything that happened from pee-wee football to high school football to having the good fortune to play at The Ohio State University molded me for my opportunity to play for the New York Jets", Mangold wrote in an extended farewell letter attached with his tweet. "But as I reflect back, I wouldn't trade my experiences for the world".

The Jets drafted him 29th overall in 2006 and played in 164 games. Mangold has been one of the NFL's top centers over the past decade. He made seven Pro Bowls and was twice named first-team All-Pro.

Jets Pro-Bowl center Nick Mangold is calling it a career after 11-years in the NFL.

Mangold, a seven-time Pro Bowler and two-time All-Pro, started 171 games in his 11-year career, all with the Jets.

"I want to thank the fans for all their support", Mangold wrote. I learned this attribute from the vets that I played with. Forte is more noted for his eight years with the Bears. He was a first-team All-American at Ohio State in 2005.

"As I retire, I will continue my efforts to bring the Trophy home in a different capacity".

Mangold's wry sense of humor made him popular among the media, and he was often a go-to presence in the locker room as a team leader.

Mangold was cut that offseason, part of a purge of veteran players so the Jets could begin a rebuilding process. He's decided that his career is over. He talked of how his love for football grew from his youth league days in OH and the "amazing ride" he has had thanks to the sport. "And I can't wait to see what this new chapter brings".
