The company has been hit by uncertainty caused by Brexit and the collapse in sales of diesel cars in Britain with new auto sales falling by nearly 6 per cent. However, they have not yet confirmed whether workers would lose their jobs as a reduction in production.
Automaker Nissan will lay off hundreds of workers from its vehicle plant in Sunderland in northeast England due to a sharp fall in diesel auto sales, a source close to the company told AFP today.
Speaking to the FT, a Nissan spokesman said that they are having to manage a short term reduction in demand as they transition to a new range of powertrains, and expect more jobs to be created as that happens, and a further increase as the next generation Qashqai, Juke and X-Trail arrive.
Diesel sales have been falling in the United Kingdom amid a tax rise on new diesel vehicles, and a government announcement that sales of all new diesel and petrol cars and vans would be banned by 2040.

Nissan are cutting jobs at their Sunderland Plant in the United Kingdom as demand for diesel-engined cars slumps across Europe reports the Financial Times.
The company said it was in discussions with employees and that any job losses would be among its permanent workforce and would be voluntary.
Earlier this month Jaguar Land Rover announced it was not renewing the contracts for 1,000 temporary workers at its largest factory, in Solihull, West Midlands, due to "headwinds" from declining diesel sales.
Auto sales across the United Kingdom and Europe have fallen in recent months.
