Health Workers Threaten To Begin Nationwide Strike From Midnight Today
Nurses, pharmacists, and lab scientists working in federal hospitals across the country have announced the beginning of an indefinite strike, Punch reports.
The health workers, had, on Monday, issued strike threat, after what it called federal government's failure to implement the agreement signed with the unions September 30, last year.
Oluwatuyi said that they would not call off the strike until government meets their demands.
She urged the union to consider the plight of the masses, who always suffered more during such actions in the health sector. Other demands are the implementation of court judgments and upward review of retirement age from 60 to 65 years.
The body said the threat by JOHESU to commence indefinite strike by midnight, on Wednesday (today), was uncalled for because their demands were envy-driven.
According to JOHESU, it had no other option but to resort to the strike to press home their demands since the Federal Government refused to comply with the agreements reached with it when they suspended their last strike on similar issue over six months ago. Last month, we also threatened to go on strike after 30 working days which will expire tomorrow (Tuesday) and government have not really done anything tangible.
"JOHESU as a mature and responsible organization gave 21 days' notice on February 5, this year, in the first instance to enable the Federal Government to do the needful".

The JOHESU official, stated that it was painful that while the FG had implemented the salary structure for medical doctors, other members of the unions had been neglected since 2009.
Health workers at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital (OAUTH), Ile-Ife, Osun State have joined the nationwide strike declared by the Joint Health Staff Union (JOHESU) over non implementation of a Memorandum of Understanding that the Federal Government signed with the union.
Biobelemoye also asked members of the union at the states and local government-owned health institutions to prepare their members for possible solidarity strike, if the government failed to attend to their demands.
Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) yesterday described the Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU) as "an illegal body" that should not be accorded any recognition by Nigerians.
