Ex-head of Kemerovo State Construction Supervision Service charged
The governor of Russia's Kemerovo region that was struck by a fire last month that killed more than 60 people at a shopping centre said he was resigning from his post. A criminal case has been launched over involuntary manslaughter, violation of fire safety regulations that left more than two persons dead and provisions of services that don't meet safety requirements.
Officials put the death toll at 64 people, including at least 41 children, and said 25 of the 76 injured were hospitalized.
The court arrested Yulia Bogdanova, the CEO of the mall, and Tanziliya Komkova, the Head of the Kemerovo State Construction Supervision and Inspection Service. People in other countries have honored the memory of the victims as well. "The investigation determined that being responsible for fire safety provision, Bogdanova was repeatedly informed by her subordinates about failures of the fire security system of the building", the statement said.
In the center of Kemerovo, angry demonstrators on March 27 protested amid complaints of official corruption, holding signs with slogans such as "Corruption kills!" and "Tell the truth!"
In a meeting with Putin about the deadly fire, the governor said there were only around 200 people at the demonstration when, in fact, thousands had shown up.
