While Nassar is now serving 175 years in prison on state and federal charges of criminal sexual behavior; the president of USAG and USOC at the time have resigned; and USAG no longer holds training sessions at the Karolyi ranch, Maroney and her Fierce Five teammates say more needs to be done to ensure that the culture of ignoring and not acting on complaints of sexual abuse, not just by a national team doctor but by any adult working with gymnasts in any gym, is changed.

But that success came at a cost.

Maroney, 22, said in a Twitter post in October that she was abused by Nassar starting when she was 13 and attending a US national team training camp in Houston.

Speedskater Bridie Farrel and figure skater Craig Maurizi will be in Washington, D.C.as well, both have said they were abused by a mentor or coach while competing in their sport.

She said speaking out about her experience in October, amid the #MeToo movement, took a weight off her shoulders.

"In a way, the fear turned to fearlessness when I knew it would help so many people. A lot of people say it's empowering to speak, and it really was".

"My team won gold medals in spite of" USA Gymnastics and the Olympic Committee, Maroney said. They don't build champions, they break them. "But we're changing that". Olympic gold medalist Jordyn Wieber is the latest gymnast to sue Michigan State University, USA Gymnastics and others over former sports doctor Larry Nasssar's sexual abuse.

After pleading guilty to seven counts of felony first-degree criminal sexual conduct back in November 2017, Nassar was convicted and sentenced to 40 to 175 years for the sexual abuse for more than 150 women who testified against the disgraced USA Gymnastics doctor in court in January. He was sentenced to 60 years in prison on federal child pornography charges and 300 years in prison on the state charges.

At his criminal trials in MI, almost 200 girls and women came forward in remarkable testimony to speak about what Nassar did and how his abuse affected their lives.

The USAG "made a corporate decision to purge or otherwise destroy all medical records of victims of Nassar, including those medical records of Jordyn Wieber, in order to further hide the sexual abuse of Nassar", the suit alleges.

The organizations have denied legal wrongdoing, and law enforcement investigators have begun working to learn how the abuse continued for so long. The USA Gymnastics, MSU and the USOC continued to look away to protect their reputations. "All they cared about was money, medals and it didn't seem like anything else", Maroney said. "I think the victims need to have a voice in that process if we're really going to fix it".
