The Pakistani Foreign Ministry summoned on Sunday US Ambassador to Islamabad David Hale to lodge a protest over a fatal auto accident, involving a US diplomatic vehicle, the ministry said in a press release.

Foreign Secretary Tehmina Janjua summoned the U.S. ambassador to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to register the protest.

The Pakistan Foreign Office on Sunday said it is closely following an investigation into the road accident involving a senior USA diplomat which resulted in the death of a person in the federal capital, ARY NEWS reports.

Pakistan said "justice will take its course in accordance with the law of the land and the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations 1961", indicating it recognizes the US official's diplomatic immunity.

The U.S. Embassy confirmed Saturday's road accident in Islamabad and said it was cooperating with authorities in the investigation.
